Dr. Udai’s Review

Dr. Joel Kahn is one of the pioneering physicians to champion the benefits of a Whole Food Plant-Based (WFPB) diet. His book, The Plant-Based Solution, addresses issues of animal cruelty in livestock raising. Although I generally avoid ethical topics on this website and focus instead on the health benefits of a plant-based diet, I must recommend Dr. Kahn’s book. It beautifully presents scientific studies and anecdotes from his practice about the impact of a WFPB diet, with chapters dedicated to heart health, diabetes, weight management, blood pressure, cholesterol, cancer, dementia, autoimmune diseases, and more.

Dr. Kahn completed his training as an interventional cardiologist around the time Dr. Dean Ornish published the groundbreaking Lifestyle Heart Trial, which demonstrated that a WFPB diet, combined with a diet and exercise intervention, can reverse coronary artery disease. During the 1990s, interventional cardiologists were highly compensated for placing stents in patients’ coronary arteries. Despite the financial incentive to focus solely on this procedure, which he had spent years mastering, Dr. Kahn emerged as a leading advocate for using diet to prevent coronary artery disease. He has also become a prominent expert in one of the newest frontiers of preventive cardiology, authoring the book, Lipoprotein(a), The Heart’s Quiet Killer, in 2020.”
